AFRICAN ORIGIN ASHANTI

In response to an invitation from an organisation in South London, Singh Theatre devised a set of stories based around the legendary Spiderman KWAKU ANANSI. Rani Singh has researched the traditional Ashanti legends from Ghana, West Africa, although Anansi the Spiderman is a much loved mythological figure who appears all over the World.

Kwaku Anansi travelled the World like an old man on webstrings. At that time, it is said, there were no stories in the World, because the Sky-God kept them high in the sky locked up in a wooden box. Anansi wanted to have the stories so that he could learn about beginnings, middles and endings.

The Sky-God sets Anansi a series of tests which he takes with the help of his spider-wife ASO. The tests are all different and difficult, and take place in atmospheric settings which include palm trees and pound yams (called ETOs), pythons, leopards, hornets, and fairies.
